“I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish.” Everyone needs rest. Without moments of reflection and recreation, we can all lose our grip on sanity and especially on the right perspectives that we need to go through this awesome journey we call life. Even too much “off-time” can lead to laziness, listless feelings, and even apathy. There must be sufficient time in our lives to remember why we have a life and Who gave it to us. This also feeds and grows our faith. It also helps us be truly realistic with our own sinfulness and unchecked egos.
“And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.” The Gospel painfully reminds what can happen if our lives do not pass the test of balance. When our faith is weak, we tend to find all the wrong reasons to be unhappy and unfulfilled. We forget how beautiful life can be and how blessed we truly are, especially with all the people God has placed in it. As we near the end of this incredibly full month of January, let us all remember to find a quiet time of wonder and gratitude. Then and only then will we be able to see “how good the Lord is.”
“Sensitive people feel so deeply they often have to retreat from the world, in order to dig beneath the layers of pain to find their faith and courage.” Shannon L. Alder
